HELLO!

Jul 23, 10 / Looking for a city, looking for a job : I'll be fine once I get it; I'll be gooooood (thanks for the inspiration, Kid Cudi).

Jul 17, 10 / Freelance : I am currently working on a freelance project in which I get to draw letters and paint with watercolors! My dreams have been fulfilled.
--------

Jul 13, 10 / Roadtrip Return : I discovered and explored so much America in these past two months! We loved so many places, especially Austin, the coast of NorCal/Oregon, Madison, and NC. We are having a hard time deciding where to live and work. Suggestions?

Apr 28, 10 / "The time has come," the walrus said, "To talk of other things; of shoes and ships and ceiling wax; of cabagges and kings."
In two days, I graduate from over seventeen years of school. After one week at home, Blake and I will depart for a tour of the USA.

Apr 18, 10 / First Place AIGA Portfolio! : This weekend, I attended AIGA Jacksonville's 21st Annual Portfolio Review. I received much valuable feedback and was able to see student work from other Florida schools. After many hours of interviews and butterflies, I was joyfully surprised to win the first place portfolio!
--------

Apr 14, 10 / Message Received! : Casey Caplowe, the Creative Director of Good Magazine received my Message in a Jar! He "opened it up and was totally excited" and says "We'll definitely keep you in mind for upcoming design projects, and please feel free to send other fun ideas my way whenever." Yay :)
--------

Apr 12, 10 / Business Cards and Cork Covers : In preparation for the AIGA Jacksonville Portfolio Review next weekend, I have designed and printed over 100 business cards and my portfolio book. Themes of displayed character and collection are referenced through the jar logomark and the cork book cover. On the business cards, the jar overlays images and experiences collected from my travels.
--------

Mar 15, 10 / Coopepueblos Coffee : I just got back from a week of coffee farming in Costa Rica as a part of Florida Alternative Breaks. We learned much about the cooperative process and became very involved in helping the farmers and their families. Blake Suárez and I volunteered to design a new package label and website to further the marketing and sale of Coopepueblos Coffee in the United States. Coopepueblos.com will be up and running soon. Until then, taste from here!

Feb 08, 10 / Tofu Towel : My kitchen is not always stocked with every ingredient I need to cook a meal, so I am drawn to recipe books which allow me to build off of the ingredients I do have. For people like me, I created this visual map of the book, 101 Things To Do With Tofu, in a branching form based on ingredients commonly found in one's pantry. I printed the map on dish towels so that it may be easily accessible in the kitchen. The forty-eight icons emulate Japanese kawaii style. More photos here.

Feb 06, 10 / Ligature 19 NOW : Ligature is here! The gallery is beautiful (big thanks to Blake Suárez and Stephen Rockwood), alumni have returned, and the guest designers are inspiring us through lectures, workshops, and late night drinks. I was honored to receive Ligature 19's Best Senior award for my Neon Rococo Oak Park Stage.
--------

Feb 03, 10 / Message in a Jar : I am sending a message in a jar to Good Magazine and Anthropologie. My package, which includes a glass jar, small book, return envelope, and plastic army man, proposes a collaboration between the social information graphics of Good and the elaborate window displays of Anthropologie. The project takes the form of a book of hand-built scenes overlain with graphical data. Book photos to come. See all five collages here.

Jan 30, 10 / Creativity in the Arts and Sciences : Last Sunday, I exhibited the 09-10 FAB flyers and shirts in UF's Creativity in the Arts and Sciences show sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Science Foundation. I spoke to judges about FAB's sustainable processes and social responsibility and won first place in the visual arts category, earning a $1000 scholarship!

Jan 29, 10 / Ligature 19 : Ligature is an annual exhibition of student design work at the University of Florida. The highlight of this student-run show is a weekend-long design symposium featuring lectures and workshops with nationally recognized designers, Emily CM Anderson, Debbie Millman, and Nikolay Saveliev. My entries include Symbolize and Summarize Saul Bass and Neon Rococo Oak Park Stage.

Jan 24, 10 / Good Morning : Welcome to stephdavl.com, my design portfolio and blog site. The site is finally finished; thank you for waiting!
--------

Jan 23, 10 / Writing of the Brain : I recently learned how to manually develop my own film and photographs. This set of photos examines handwriting as connected to personality. The subjects were simply instructed to write their name with a flashlight. The handwriting samples revealed that some people were quieter and more contained, writing with small, slow letters. Other, more open sprits freely used the darkness as their canvas for quick, expressive movement. See all of the photos here.

Jan 22, 10 / FAC 314 : This is my second home, our design studio in FAC 314. It is messy because we are at work designing. To see where I sit, click here.
